Verdict

Verdict: A laser cap is the home light device with the best evidence behind it, and Kiierr holds an FDA clearance for pattern hair loss (K181878). It's our hair pick. Two caveats: the clearance names the "Kiierr 272 Laser" and "Kiierr 148 Laser", so check your model is one of those, and expect months of every-other-day use before you can judge it.

Who it's for and who it isn't

  • For: men with Norwood-Hamilton IIa to V pattern hair loss and women with Ludwig-Savin I to II, the ranges on Kiierr's label.
  • For: Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV, also per the label.
  • Not for: bald areas, advanced hair loss, or hair loss from other causes (such as alopecia areata or thyroid problems). See a doctor first if you don't know the cause.
  • Not for: anyone who won't keep up 30 minutes every other day for months.

Warranty: 2 years. Kiierr's growth guarantee requires 210 days of consistent use, a before photo registered within 45 days, and a return between day 210 and 240; a 25% fee applies unless you provide 7-month photos2.

Verified specs

  • Wavelength: 650 nm laser diodes (the 272 Elite page says "not LEDs")2. We didn't confirm the wavelengths of the DualWave models.
  • Output: 1,360 mW total for the 272 Elite, about 5 mW per diode by our arithmetic2. Kiierr doesn't publish irradiance at the scalp, and we found no independent measurement.
  • Treatment area: the scalp under the cap; 148 or 272 to 312 diodes depending on the model.
  • Schedule: 30 minutes every other day for the 272 Elite2. A Kiierr specs page also says "only 6 minutes a day" without naming a model, so follow the manual for your cap.

FDA status

FDA cleared K181878 on September 5, 2018 for the "Kiierr 272 Laser" and "Kiierr 148 Laser", product code OAP (laser hair comb or cap), as substantially equivalent to earlier devices3. OAP devices are cleared to promote hair growth in androgenetic alopecia. We didn't find a separate clearance naming the DualWave, Ultra Flex or Elite models; Kiierr's pages say "FDA cleared" but give no K number, so ask Kiierr which clearance covers the model you're buying.

What the evidence supports

Hair thinning is the best-supported use of home red light (grade A−). A 2024 meta-analysis of 38 studies with 3,098 patients found laser and LED devices improved hair density compared with placebo (SMD 1.14 at 4 to 20 weeks and 1.44 beyond 20 weeks), though results varied a lot between studies4. An earlier meta-analysis of randomized trials found lower-frequency treatment did better than higher-frequency5, so more sessions aren't better. We found no independent trial of a Kiierr cap itself. See the evidence map.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • FDA-cleared for pattern hair loss (272 and 148).
  • The best evidence of any home light use.
  • Hands-free while it runs.
  • Published label limits for who it suits.

Cons

  • Slow. Months before you can judge results.
  • Guarantee strings. Photos, deadlines and a 25% fee.
  • Clearance covers named models. Check yours.
  • Ongoing. Gains in trials were measured during treatment; plan to keep using it.

Alternatives

  • iRestore: a helmet with two OAP clearances and a shorter daily session.
  • Capillus: caps with 6-minute daily sessions and several OAP clearances, at higher prices.

FAQ

Is the Kiierr laser cap FDA-cleared?

The Kiierr 272 and 148 lasers are, under K181878, for androgenetic alopecia. Confirm that clearance covers the exact model you buy.

How long until I see results?

Trials measured hair density from 4 weeks to beyond 20 weeks. Kiierr's own guarantee assumes 7 months.

Does it work for women?

Kiierr's label covers women with Ludwig-Savin I to II hair loss. The meta-analyses included both men and women.
