Best Smart Rings in 2026, by Evidence

Smart ring picks against fixed criteria: independent sleep and HRV validation, subscription costs over three years, battery, sizing, and what the Oura patent rulings mean for Ultrahuman, RingConn and Samsung buyers.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never decides our picks. How we make money

Last verified November 2, 2026. Every price, legal status and accuracy figure on this page links to the source we checked. Where we couldn't confirm something, we say so.

We have not tested these rings ourselves; accuracy figures come from the peer-reviewed studies cited below.

The short answer

If you want the ring with the most independent evidence behind its sleep and heart data, buy an Oura, and budget about $70 a year for the membership. If you won't pay a subscription, RingConn Gen 3 (any phone) and Samsung Galaxy Ring (Samsung phones only) are the options we'd look at, but neither has an independent validation study we could find. All smart rings are decent at total sleep time and overnight heart rate, weaker at sleep stages, and unproven for "readiness" scores.

Status snapshot: legal and regulatory status

Smart rings are sold as wellness devices, not medical devices. Two things matter more than usual in this category: whether a ring can legally be imported into the US after Oura's patent wins, and whether any single feature has FDA clearance.

RingUS import status (November 2, 2026)FDA statusSubscription

Wellness device vs cleared feature. A ring can be a general wellness product while one feature on it is FDA-cleared. When a brand says "FDA-cleared", ask which feature, and look for a K number or De Novo number you can check. Sleep scores, readiness scores, "cardio age" and "vascular" insights are not FDA-reviewed on any ring here.

Picks by use

We apply the same four criteria to every ring, whether or not the brand pays us:

  1. It can be bought legally in the US on the date shown (not covered by an import ban) and is the brand's current model.
  2. Price, subscription cost, battery claim and return terms are published on the brand's site.
  3. We rank by independent evidence first: a peer-reviewed study, not written by the company, comparing that brand's ring to polysomnography (PSG, the lab sleep test) or ECG. Where no ring meets this for a use, we say so next to the pick.
  4. Commission plays no part.

Best evidence for sleep and overnight heart data: Oura Ring 5

Oura is the only ring brand with several independent validation studies. Against PSG, Oura's Gen 3 ring matched total sleep time and wake after sleep onset with no significant difference in 96 adults17, and a meta-analysis of six studies (388 people) found no significant difference from lab sleep studies on standard sleep measures21. Against ECG, Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 had the closest agreement for overnight heart rate and HRV of the five wearables tested22. One caveat: the studies used Gen 3 and Ring 4. We found no published validation of the Ring 5, which launched on May 28, 2026 with new sensors and a smaller body8. On November 2, 2026 the Ring 5 was $399 in silver or black and $499 in other finishes; the Ring 4 was $349 to $39967. Oura lists 6 to 9 days of battery, a 30-day return window and a one-year US warranty7.

The membership is the catch. Without it, the app shows only the three daily scores; trends and detail need $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year7. Over three years that makes a $399 Ring 5 cost about $609. If you want the validated hardware for less, the Ring 4 is still sold and is the generation tested against ECG in 202522.

No subscription, iPhone or Android: RingConn Gen 3

RingConn charges nothing after purchase. The Gen 3 launched in May 20265. On November 2, 2026 the Gen 3 was $349 on ringconn.com, with sizes 6 to 15, a free sizing kit, up to 14 days of claimed battery, a vibration motor for alerts, 14-day returns and a one-year warranty outside the EEA11. It is sold under a patent license from Oura, so the import ban doesn't apply1. Evidence gap: we found no independent peer-reviewed study of any RingConn ring against PSG or ECG. Its "sleep apnea pattern" and "vascular" features are marketed as insights, and RingConn says the ring is not a medical device11. Treat its numbers as trends, not measurements.

Samsung phone owners: Galaxy Ring

The Galaxy Ring needs a Samsung Galaxy phone and the Samsung Health app12, so it's only worth considering if you have one. On November 2, 2026 Samsung listed it from $299.99, with no subscription, a 9-size sizing kit (5 to 13) that you wear for 24 hours before ordering, and up to 7 days of battery for sizes 12 and 13 (up to 6 for smaller sizes)12. Samsung says the ring will get an FDA-cleared sleep apnea risk feature, extending one first cleared for Galaxy watches in February 202413. That could make it the only ring with a cleared screening feature, but we couldn't confirm the ring's clearance on November 2, 2026. Evidence gap: a PubMed search reported in August 2026 found no published sleep validation of the Galaxy Ring24, and we found none either. The original ring is from 2024; reports say a Galaxy Ring 2 is not expected before early 202714.

Not picked: The Ultrahuman Ring Pro is legal to buy and has the longest claimed battery (up to 15 days, $479 with its charging case)910, but the only published study we found is a company-authored user cohort with no reference device24, and Oura filed a new patent complaint against it in October 20264. It meets criteria 1 and 2 and ties RingConn on evidence; we picked RingConn because it costs less and isn't in active litigation. The Ultrahuman Ring Air fails criterion 1: it can't be imported into the US. The Circular Ring 2 ($349, no subscription for now) has an ECG, but we couldn't verify the FDA clearance Circular describes, found no validation study, and Android Central's June 2026 review found workout heart rate often off and syncing slow1516.

Battery claims are maximums. Oura and Samsung both say smaller sizes get less battery612. Ultrahuman's 15 days assumes its low-power mode; it quotes about 12 in its higher-sampling mode10.

What it measuresGradeBest evidenceWhich rings it applies to
Total sleep time and sleep vs wakeA− (Oura); D (others)Oura Gen 3 vs multi-night PSG, 96 adults: no significant difference in total sleep time or wake after sleep onset; 94% sensitivity for sleep, 73 to 75% specificity for wake17. Meta-analysis of six studies, 388 people: total sleep time within about 3 minutes of lab studies on average21. Accuracy drops in older adults: one small 2026 study (19 people aged 56 to 80, one night each) found Oura underestimated total sleep by 75.5 minutes20.Oura Gen 3 and later. No independent PSG study found for RingConn, Galaxy Ring, Ultrahuman or Circular.
Sleep stages (light, deep, REM)B− (Oura); D (others)In healthy adults, Oura's stage accuracy ranged from 75.5% (light) to 90.6% (REM)17, and in an Oura-funded study Oura was the only one of three devices whose stage totals didn't differ significantly from PSG18. In a clinical sleep-lab sample of 45 patients, Oura Gen 3's 4-stage agreement fell to 53% (kappa 0.31) and individual errors were often large19.Oura Gen 3
Overnight resting heart rate and HRVA− (Oura); D (others)13 adults, 536 nights vs ECG: Oura Gen 4 HRV agreement (CCC) 0.99, Gen 3 0.97, versus 0.94 for Whoop 4.0 and 0.87 for a Garmin Fenix 622. Oura's agreement weakened at higher HRV values25. A second study found strong agreement with ECG once poor-quality segments were filtered23.Oura Gen 3 and Ring 4
Sleep apnea screeningCpendingSamsung's sleep apnea feature is FDA-cleared on Galaxy watches (2024); Samsung says the ring version is cleared and rolling out in fall 202613. We found no published accuracy data for the ring. RingConn's apnea "pattern insights" are not FDA-reviewed11.Galaxy Ring (announced)
Readiness, recovery, energy scoresDThese are proprietary blends of sleep, heart rate, HRV and temperature. We found no study showing that following a ring's readiness score improves training, health or injury rates. All
Blood pressure signals, "vascular" and cardio ageDNo independent validation found. Ultrahuman's only published paper describes its Cardio Age metric across 442 users, with no reference standard24.Oura (Blood Pressure Signals), RingConn, Ultrahuman

The pattern: rings are good at the slow, overnight signals (heart rate, HRV, total sleep), because you're still and the finger has strong blood flow. They are weaker at sleep stages, and nobody has shown that a composite "readiness" score leads to better decisions. The Oura patent dispute: what it means for buyers

Oura filed a complaint at the US International Trade Commission (ITC) in 2024 claiming that Ultrahuman, RingConn and Circular infringed its smart ring patents. The ITC ruled for Oura on August 21, 2025 and issued an exclusion order (a ban on importing the infringing rings) and cease-and-desist orders. The presidential review period ended on October 21, 2025 without a veto, so the ban took effect1. Since then:

  • RingConn settled on October 21, 2025 with a multi-year license and royalties, so its rings stay on sale1.
  • Circular left the case in 2024 by taking a license2.
  • Ultrahuman redesigned its ring. US Customs ruled in March 2026 that the Ring Pro falls outside the exclusion order, and US shipments began after preorders reopened on 24 March3. Oura called that ruling "not a final or comprehensive ruling" on the new design3, and in October 2026 asserted two further patents against Ultrahuman. Ultrahuman says no injunction has been entered and sales continue4. The Ring Air remains barred2.
  • Samsung and Oura have competing cases, including a second Oura ITC investigation and a Samsung ITC complaint seeking a ban on Oura rings. None had been decided by late August 20262. Amazfit's maker Zepp settled with Oura in 2026, and Luna Ring's maker agreed to leave the US market2.

What this means if you're buying: an exclusion order stops new imports, not rings people already own. The practical risks are elsewhere. A ring bought from a grey-market seller may have no US warranty. A brand that loses a US case may cut back US support over time. And the Samsung and Ultrahuman disputes are still open, so the picture could change again. If you're choosing between two similar rings, the licensed or patent-holding brands (Oura, RingConn, Circular) carry the least legal uncertainty today. Litigation says nothing about which ring is more accurate.

How to choose a smart ring

Count the subscription

Work out the cost over the years you'll wear it. At $69.99 a year, Oura's membership adds about $210 over three years7. RingConn, Samsung and Ultrahuman don't require one, though Ultrahuman sells optional add-ons9. Circular has no subscription for now; Android Central expects future features to be paid15.

Size with the brand's own kit

Ring sizes are not standard. Oura says sizing differs between its own generations, so order the kit for the exact model7. RingConn says Gen 3 sizes differ from its older rings and from jewelry sizes11. Ultrahuman says Ring Pro sizes "may differ slightly" from standard US sizes9. Samsung asks you to wear a sample for 24 hours before ordering12. Wear the sizer overnight and after exercise, when fingers swell. A loose ring gives worse readings, because the sensors need steady skin contact.

Check your phone

The Galaxy Ring needs a Samsung Galaxy phone12. The others work with iPhone and Android.

Ring or watch?

A ring is better for sleep (lighter, less movement noise) and worse for workouts: no screen, no GPS, and finger heart rate during hard exercise is less reliable. Android Central found Circular's workout heart rate often over- or underestimated15. If training data matters most, look at our Garmin watch guide.

Safety and who should think twice

  • Swelling and injury. Take the ring off if your fingers swell (pregnancy, heat, injury, some medicines). Ultrahuman designed the Ring Pro to be cut apart more easily in an emergency10, which tells you this is a real concern with titanium rings.
  • Medical scans and surgery. Remove it before an MRI or surgery, as you would any metal ring and any electronic device.
  • Battery problems. Stop wearing a ring that bulges, gets hot or won't charge. Android Central reported in May 2026 that Samsung was investigating Galaxy Ring battery swelling14.
  • Health anxiety. If checking sleep scores makes your sleep worse, take a break from the app. Low scores on one night mean little.
  • Not a diagnosis. Snoring alerts, breathing disturbance trends and blood pressure signals are not a sleep study or a blood pressure check. If you're worried about sleep apnea or blood pressure, see a doctor.

Myths

  • "My ring measures my deep sleep." It estimates it from movement, heart rate and temperature. Even the best-studied ring's stage accuracy falls in clinical and older groups1920.
  • "Validated" means the ring I'm buying was tested. Most studies tested older models. The Oura evidence is for Gen 3 and Ring 4, not the Ring 51722.
  • "A higher readiness score means I should train hard." No study we found tested that. Use it as one input next to how you feel and your training plan.
  • "The import ban means my Ultrahuman will stop working." The order covers imports, not rings people already own. It also doesn't cover the redesigned Ring Pro, which Ultrahuman says it is still selling4.
  • "FDA-cleared ring" means the whole ring. Clearances cover a named feature, such as sleep apnea risk on the Galaxy Ring13, not the sleep or readiness scores.

FAQ

Which smart ring is most accurate?

Oura is the only brand with several independent studies against PSG and ECG, and it did well for total sleep time and overnight heart rate and HRV1722. The others may be accurate too, but we found no independent studies to show it.

Is the Oura membership worth it?

Only if you'll use the trends. Without it you get the three daily scores only7. If you just want sleep time and resting heart rate, a no-subscription ring is cheaper, at the cost of less evidence.

Can I buy an Ultrahuman ring in the US?

The Ring Pro, yes: US Customs ruled it outside the import ban in March 20263. The Ring Air, no: it remains under the exclusion order2. Oura's new October 2026 complaint against the Ring Pro is undecided4.

Can a smart ring detect sleep apnea?

It can flag risk, not diagnose it. Samsung's feature is the only one announced as FDA-cleared for a ring, and we couldn't yet confirm the ring clearance or see accuracy data13. A sleep study is still how apnea is diagnosed.

Ring or Whoop or watch for recovery?

For overnight HRV, Oura and Whoop had the best agreement with ECG in the one study that tested both22. Watches add GPS and workout data. We compare them in Whoop vs Oura vs Garmin.

Which finger should I wear it on?

Follow the brand's guidance and size for that finger. RingConn's kit lets you try the index, middle or ring finger11. Pick the finger where the ring fits snugly without rotating, and keep it there, since readings can shift if you move fingers.

Can I use HSA or FSA money?

Oura and Samsung say their rings are HSA and FSA eligible712. Check with your plan administrator.
