Eight Sleep Pod 6 vs Chilipad 2.0: Bed Cooling Compared

Eight Sleep Pod 6 vs Sleepme Chilipad 2.0 (the Dock Pro's successor): prices, the Autopilot subscription, three-year cost, noise, warranty and what the sleep-temperature evidence shows.

The short version

Both systems pump temperature-controlled water through a thin cover on top of your mattress, and both can cool to 55°F. The differences are cost structure and software. Eight Sleep's Pod 6 (released September 2026) adds sleep tracking, automatic overnight adjustments and an optional moving base, but it needs a paid Autopilot plan ($199 to $399 a year)1, 2. Sleepme's Chilipad 2.0 costs about the same up front for two sleepers, has no subscription, and warms to 115°F instead of 110°F3, 4. If you want a bed that cools and you don't care about sleep data, the Chilipad is the cheaper system to own. If you want the tracking and automation, the Pod is the more complete product. Neither is FDA-cleared for anything, and no independent trial has compared them.

What changed since our older reviews

Both brands have replaced the models we reviewed in 2023. Eight Sleep's Pod Pro and the Eight Sleep mattress bundle are gone; Pod 6 replaced Pod 5 in September 20262, 5. Sleepme renamed the Chilipad Dock Pro to "Chilipad 1.0" and now sells a redesigned Chilipad 2.0; 1.0 is on sale while stock lasts6. The original water-based Chilipad in our old review is no longer sold. The Ooler was discontinued in December 2023; Sleepme says its app still works, but its one-year warranty has now run out on every unit7.

Older models are cheaper if you can find them: Chilipad 1.0 started at $1,299 with a one-year warranty, and the Chilipad Cube at $699 (60°F to 115°F, remote only, no app)4. Check that any used or refurbished unit still has warranty cover.

What each costs over three years

For two people sharing a Queen, using the prices above and assuming the cheapest plan that keeps each system fully working:

Up frontPlan, 3 years3-year totalWarranty
Pod 6 Standard + Autopilot Standard$2,699$597$3,2962 years
Pod 6 Standard + Autopilot Enhanced$2,699$897$3,5965 years
Chilipad 2.0, Queen dual zone$2,998$0$2,9982 years (3 with extension)
Chilipad 2.0, one Half Queen$1,699$0$1,6992 years

Autopilot is required for the first 12 months of owning a Pod; after that it is optional2, 20. If you cancel, Eight Sleep says you keep a manual temperature dial for each side, but you lose temperature schedules and automatic overnight adjustments, the vibration and thermal alarm, sleep and health reports, Away mode and snoring features on the Base20. That is why the table counts three years of a plan: without one, the Pod is a manually set cooling pad. We read Eight Sleep's support answers through a secondary source that quotes them, so confirm with Eight Sleep before you buy.

What the evidence says about bed temperature

Grades: A consistent randomized trials or meta-analyses. B randomized or controlled trials that are small or varied. C few, small or uncontrolled studies. D brand data, unpublished, or lab-only. X a safety signal.

OutcomeGradeBest evidenceWhat was tested
A hot or humid bedroom disrupts sleepBReview of laboratory studies: heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces deep (slow-wave) and REM sleep; humidity makes it worse12.Room and bed climate in sleep labs
A cooler sleep surface increases deep sleepCThree randomized, blinded crossover studies, 72 adults (young men, middle-aged men, postmenopausal women), one night each: a mattress that soaks up more body heat lowered the surface temperature by about 2.8°C and core temperature by 0.15°C, added 7.5 minutes of deep sleep a night and lowered heart rate by about 2.4 beats a minute. One author works for the mattress maker13.A high-heat-capacity gel mattress (Technogel), not a powered system
Small changes in skin temperature deepen sleepCOne small lab study (young adults, older adults and older adults with insomnia): raising skin temperature by about 0.4°C with a thermosuit reduced wake time and increased deep sleep, most clearly in older people and those with insomnia14.Water-perfused suit, not a mattress
Warming before bed helps you fall asleepBMeta-analysis: a warm bath or shower (40 to 42.5°C) 1 to 2 hours before bed shortened the time it took to fall asleep and improved self-rated sleep quality15.Bath or shower, not a heated bed
Fewer menopause hot flashes or night sweatsCAn uncontrolled pilot of 15 women using a cooling mattress pad for 8 weeks: hot flash and night sweat frequency fell 52% and sleep quality scores improved16. A randomized trial in 74 women with breast cancer on hormone therapy: a cooling pillow topper improved sleep efficiency compared with usual care; the drop in hot flushes was not statistically significant (p = 0.09)17. The Menopause Society's 2023 statement does not recommend cooling techniques for hot flashes, citing a lack of strong evidence18.Cooling mattress pad (Sleepme says it was involved); cooling pillow topper
Brand claims ("clinically proven", "up to 45% less snoring", "over 50% fewer hot flashes")DEight Sleep names no study for "clinically proven" or "up to 45%" less snoring on its Autopilot page1. Sleepme's marketing says its system can cut hot flash severity "by as much as 50%", based on the 15-woman pilot above19. Eight Sleep says Menopause Mode was tuned on more than 57,000 nights of its own user data, which is not a trial11.Company data

What this adds up to: the physiology is sound. Your body needs to lose heat to fall into deep sleep, and a hot bed gets in the way. But the only direct mattress-cooling studies are small, short or tied to a manufacturer, and none tested Eight Sleep or the current Chilipad against a cheaper fix such as a fan or a cooler room.

Which to choose

Eight Sleep Pod 6: tracking, automation and a full ecosystem

Pick the Pod if you want the system to adjust itself overnight, you'll use its sleep and heart data, or you want the Base (which raises the head of the bed when it detects snoring) or the cooled Blanket. Budget for Autopilot every year, and choose Enhanced if you want the 5-year warranty. The Solo size ($1,999) suits one person or one side of a bed, and a second Solo can zip on later11.

Chilipad 2.0: the same cooling with no subscription

Pick the Chilipad if you want cooling (or warming to 115°F) without a yearly plan, you already track sleep with a ring or watch, or you only need one side cooled. The nightstand remote means you don't need your phone at bedtime4. It doesn't track sleep, and its schedules don't adjust themselves.

Neither: cheaper ways to sleep cooler

If your bedroom is hot, a fan or air conditioning is cheaper and has the same physiology behind it. Air-based systems such as BedJet cost less but can't cool below room temperature. Our bed cooling systems guide compares every type, including unpowered pads.

Before you buy either

  • They move heat, they don't remove it. Water-cooled systems dump the heat from your bed into the bedroom through the Hub or Dock, so leave space around the unit.
  • Maintenance. Both use water. Sleepme asks for distilled water3; Eight Sleep replaced Pod 6's filter with a liquid added twice a year11. Register the warranty, since a leak or pump fault is a repair you can't do yourself.
  • Warming modes. If you have reduced feeling in your feet or legs (for example from diabetic neuropathy), ask your doctor before using a heated bed surface, and keep warming settings moderate.
  • Return windows are short. Both trials are 30 nights. Set a reminder.

FAQ

Is Eight Sleep or Chilipad better?

For cooling alone, they are close: same 55°F floor, same water-based design, no head-to-head trial. Eight Sleep is better if you want tracking and automation and will pay for Autopilot. Chilipad is better value if you just want a cold bed.

Do you have to pay a subscription for Eight Sleep?

Yes. Eight Sleep sells the Pod 6 with an Autopilot plan from $199 a year1, and it is required for the first 12 months. After that you can cancel and keep manual temperature control, but schedules, automatic adjustments, alarms and sleep reports stop2, 20. Chilipad has no subscription3.

Which is quieter?

We found no independent decibel measurements of either current model. Both brands call their units quiet. Both have a pump and a fan, so expect a low hum similar to a white noise machine.

Is the Ooler still sold?

No. Sleepme discontinued the Ooler in December 2023 and points owners to Chilipad 2.0. The Ooler app still works7.

What temperature should I set?

There is no proven best setting. Start near the middle of the range and adjust by comfort. In the cooling studies we found, the benefit came from helping the body lose heat early in the night, not from very cold settings.

Can these help with menopause night sweats?

Possibly, but the evidence is thin. See the evidence table above.
